About the American Association of University Women

AAUW of VA’s First 75 Years – An Online History

AAUW of Virginia is part of the national organization whose logo appears to the right. The “W” stands for women, the equidistant lines for equity, and the overlapping triangles for our three corporations…the American Association of University Women, the AAUW Educational Foundation, and the AAUW Legal Advocacy Fund… working together to promote education and equity for all women and girls, lifelong education, and positive societal change.  AAUW Corporate Overview

The American Association of University Women was formed in 1921 through the merger of the Association of Collegiate Alumnae (formed in 1881) and the Southern Association of College Women.  Our organization may be called “AAUW” or “the Association” but not “national.”  The Association is a 160,000 member organization with more than 1,600 branches nationwide that lobby and advocate for education and equity.

The term “state AAUW” refers to the state unit of AAUW, which was formerly known as division. We are known as AAUW of Virginia. The branch is the basic local unit of AAUW. We are not a “chapter,” a “club,” or a “sorority.” A branch may be referred to by name, such as, the “Alexandria Branch.”
