AAUW of VA Resource Library: Creating Branch Webpages

Sample Websites
Blacksburg Area, Bonair, McLean Area, Mt. Vernon, Reston-Herndon, Roanoke Valley and Wytheville maintain their own home pages, to which we have links on the state site.  Check them out if you want some good ideas!

Getting Webspace
One possibility for maintaining your own branch page is using America Online, Erols, Comcast or many other Internet Service Providers (ISPs) which furnish webspace to members.  AOL gives 2 MB of web space for each screen name, more than adequate for any but the most elaborate of webpages. (Keyword: My Space) The newer versions of AOL also give two additional screen names, for a total of 14 MB of web space. AOL has its own file transfer protocol (FTP), which is reasonably easy to use, and it makes online and offline page editors available.  A FREE FTP program is available online at: http://www.internet-soft.com/ftpcomm.htm (FTP Comander)

What is HTML?
Behind every webpage you view on the Internet, there is a "hidden" page composed of HTML code which is essentially ordinary text with some specific commands embedded in it, so anyone can edit a file in any text editor.  (Some have likened html to the "Reveal Codes" mode of WordPerfect.)  A list of common HTML terms can be found at Barebones HTML.  Some common and easy to use html editors include FrontPage and DreamWeaver.  MS Word also has a built-in HTML converted but some Word formatting does not covert well to HTML.

How to Create/Edit Webpages
Guidelines for setting up a webpage may be found at the Association website on the Style Guide at http://www.aauw.org/member_center/styleguide.cfm.  We ask that a link to the Virginia and Association pages be placed on your page somewhere: www.aauwofva.org and www.aauw.org

The best way for branches not maintaining their own pages to update is to have someone in the branch who knows how to use HTML or has an HTML editing program such as MS FrontPage or Dreamweaver, download the source file. (This is done by pulling up the page, then clicking on "File/Save As." )  Make the necessary changes or additions on a text editor or editing program and send the amended HTML file as an attachment to an email to: webmaster@aauwofva.org. In the subject line of the email, put "Name of Branch, Web Page Update."

It is also possible to edit the existing page on the Composer feature of Netscape 4.5+,  which will save it as an HTML file.  You can then send it as an attachment. If you use any art or a special background, please send those as attachments, also.

Backgrounds: We  have several different backgrounds available for branch pages. You may see how these look by clicking on the names listed below. If you wish to use one of these backgrounds, you can "right-click" on the webpage and save the background image on your computer.  Or specify the one you want when you send your page copy.

Information to Include on Webpages
Information you must include is the name of your president and your membership chair with telephone numbers and if possible email addresses. If neither of these have email, include an email contact if one is available.

It is also advisable to include your calendar of programs for the year, newsletters (see below) or any other information to let your viewers know what a great branch you have. ;o)

A FREE program is available on line for converting documents to PDF format at: http://pdf995.com which will even insert live hyperlinks into your newsletters.
