Virginia AAUW is seeking nominations for Educator of the Year
and Education Advocate of the Year Awards.

The Educator of the Year Award is for a public K-12 teacher, administrator, or guidance counselor who is a positive role model for girls and involved with projects or devote extra time that focus on encouraging girls’ achievement and success.  The Education Advocate of the Year Award is for a parent, community member, business partner, or other non-educator who support education through a myriad of ways (volunteering, resource, verbal and written advocacy, etc.).

The Educator of the Year Award for an individual in direct touch with students who goes over and beyond expectations relative to the education of girls.  There are administrators, teachers, and counselors (those in the daily trenches) in your neighborhood schools who rally for gender equity in education.  It is time to recognize these persons by nominating them for this distinctive award.

The Education Advocate of the Year Award is most appropriate for an advocate who is not directly involved in the schooling of students but who through their actions, writings, and words boost the cause of education, with a special emphasis on girls’ achievements.  Nominations can be active PTSA members, a dedicated school secretary, or a community member who lobbies on behalf of students or a business partner who donates educational materials, time, and energy to help students.

Branches are encouraged to submit nominees for an Educator of the Year and an Education Advocate of the Year using the criteria below.  The winners will be recognized at the Virginia AAUW Convention in April 2008.

  • Males or females who make an extraordinary contribution towards the education of girls.
  • Educators whose professional life demonstrates excellence in teaching with special emphasis on the

  • Individuals who encourage girls to excel and enroll in more and/or advanced courses especially math,
