Expand your network
Come
to
the monthly meetings of the Vienna Area Branch of AAUW and get to know
writers,
designers, lawyers, educators, retired professionals, volunteers, and
homemakers—a diverse cross-section of the Vienna/Oakton area. By working on branch
projects you will
contribute to our community and perhaps make lifelong friendships in
the
process.
You
also will be
part of an influential national organization of more than 100,000
members,
1,300 branches, and 500 college and university partners, founded in
1881 and
recognized for its research and advocacy for education for women and
girls. AAUW values
and seeks a diverse membership.
Stretch your mind
and promote equity and
education for all women
Vienna
Area
AAUW offers you continuing education at its monthly meetings. Topics range from the
impact of globalization
on women, to ending homelessness in Fairfax County.
Join one of our literature
discussion groups
(evening or morning, fiction or nonfiction) and engage in a lively
debate about
a classic or a recent best seller. Learn
about the latest legislative issues and participate in the annual
Capitol Hill
Day or volunteer as an AAUW Lobby Corps member. Support
the AAUW Legal Advocacy Fund in its efforts
to combat sex
discrimination in higher education and the workplace. Attend
workshops at the Virginia AAUW annual
convention and Northern
Virginia District
events. Develop
your leadership skills
through branch volunteer opportunities, and acquire lifelong skills in
the
process.
Have fun
Vienna
Area
AAUW provides time for fun and fellowship, too. We
hold informal potluck dinners two or three times
a year as part of
monthly meetings, and we visit a local restaurant for a holiday
luncheon in
December to benefit a local women’s shelter. Join
our new Garden Group led by a master
gardener, and learn what plants grow best in this area.
We organize local tours that are both
educational and fun; past tours have included George Mason’s home and Meadowlark Botanical Gardens.
This year, we are offering
a behind-the-scenes
tour of Wolf
Trap National Park
for the Performing Arts as a benefit for the AAUW Educational
Foundation, which is providing more than $3.7 million in funding for
more than 240 fellowships and grants to outstanding women and nonprofit
organizations in the 2011-12 academic year..
Come join us!
We
would love to see you at our next meeting!
