The
Virginia
Beach Branch was founded in 1958. Throughout the years, we have become
known for contributing to the community as well as for advocating
education and equity for women and girls. The leadership skills,
learned through AAUW participation, have enabled many of our branch
members to move to influential policy-making positions in local
government, education, and business as well as to elected and appointed
offices in Virginia AAUW.
Today
we have over 60 members from a variety of backgrounds, colleges,
professions,
and interests. We continue to focus on accomplishing our written goals.
They include increasing the number and participation of members,
raising sufficient monies for the
Education Foundation (EF) and the Legal Advocacy Funds (LAF),
continuing and expanding community action projects, increasing
involvement with public policy, and strengthening our leadership
development program and increasing our local visibility.

SCHOLARSHIP
One
of the main goals of the Virginia Beach Branch is to help advance the
education of women. We established a scholarship in 1994 to provide
funds for a student currently enrolled in an undergraduate program.
We offer at least one $400.00 scholarship each spring to a local
female resident who has returned to school after a lapse of time. We
have presented 36 scholarships as of 2010, representing almost
$16,000.

Groups
International
Dining: This group meets on a
Saturday evening
about 4 or 5 times a year at members' homes. The intent is to
experiment
with foods, dishes, and techniques which might be new to some members.
In addition to trying different cuisines, they learn about other
cultures
and, of course, have a good time!
Evening
Book Group: This group meets the
2nd Tuesday of the month,
alternating between 6:30 PM for potluck dinner meetings and 7:30 for
dessert
meetings. The group usually reads current, well- received novels,
chosen
by consensus, but has been known to read a biography, a classic, or
even
poetry.
Day Book
Group: This group meets the 1st
Thursday of the month at
7:30 AM at various restaurants around town. The group reads a mixture
of
fiction and non-fiction, both current and past favorites, all chosen by
consensus. These "early birds" enjoy literature, breakfast and a great
discussion!
