IN SERVICE TO OUR COMMUNITY

Soup Kitchen Suppers at Christ House – Margaret Zebrowski, Jan Jaynes
We provide and serve a hot meal to anyone in need of one at Christ House Soup Kitchen on S. West St. in Alexandria, on the 5th Wednesday of every month that has a 5th Wednesday. Meals consist of pizza from Marino’s Pizza and Subs, (1234 Jefferson Davis Highway , Alexandria), and packaged brownies, cookies, and salads from Alexandria Branch members. This is a very popular meal with the Christ House supper guests. Supper dates this membership year are: April 30 and July 30

Scholarship Awards to T.C. Williams students – June Hajjar
In 1998 our Branch presented a $500 scholarship award to a senior girl from T. C. Williams High School . We gave scholarship awards to seniors in 1999, 2000, and 2001. We increased the Scholarship Award to $1,000 and presented it to a senior in 2003, 2005 and 2006. Any of our members who wish to donate to the scholarship fund may do so with a check written to AAUW, Alexandria Branch, memo-Scholarship Award. Mail it to Mary Trimbell, Treasurer.

Legal Advocacy Fund – Vera Willis
The nation's largest legal fund focused solely on sex discrimination in higher education, the AAUW Legal Advocacy Fund provides funding and a support system to women fighting sex discrimination at colleges and universities. The Branch provides monetary donations through the Annual Blizzard of Funds, a phonathon to encourage each member to donate a minimum amount. Raffles and fundraisers are held throughout the membership year.

Educational Foundation – Sylvia Linke
The Educational Foundation (EF) raises and distributes philanthropic funds to advance women's educational and career opportunities through fellowships, grants, and groundbreaking research. EF is the largest source of funding exclusively for graduate women. The Alexandria branch supports EF by earmarking $1 from the annual dues, encouraging individual donations, and, through fundraising events. Two annual Alexandria Branch events are devoted to raising money for EF: the holiday luncheon in December and the sponsorship of an evening of theater at the Little Theatre of Alexandria.

OUR INTEREST GROUPS

Francophile Group – Susan Cash
We meet monthly to discuss topics related to French and European culture, literature and history. Our recent topics have included books such as, The Piano Shop of the Left Bank, A Place in the World Called Paris, Five Quarters of the Orange , and The Arrogance of the French.  We also recently celebrated Bastille Day at Le Gaulois Restaurant in Old Town Alexandria.

Cultural Events – Susan Werner, Priscilla Wiener
The Cultural Events group usually meets on a Saturday. We explore the myriad events and sites available to us in this culturally rich area. Past outings included the Spy Museum and historic Culpeper with a local author as tour guide. Events planned for this coming year include a selection from the John Yagerline Fall Lecture Series on Tavern Beverages at the Gadsby’s Tavern Museum on Thursday nights in October; a visit to the recently reopened National Museum of American Art and The National Portrait Gallery; a visit to a special exhibit at the National Gallery of Art; and an exploration of the Bead Museum. The Cultural Group welcomes new ideas and the opportunity to take advantage of new events as they become available.

Book Group –  Ellen Pickering
Love to read? Wish you could talk to someone about the latest book you read? The Book Group offers you an opportunity to engage in lively discussions about current books and choice classics. The group has been meeting since the fall of 1980 with few breaks. The Book Group meets on Sunday afternoons at 4:00 P.M. Check The Alexandria Schooner newsletter for Book Group meeting locations and book selections.

Mystery Book Group – Susan Werner
This very popular book group meets monthly throughout the year usually on the 4th Tuesday of the month. Meetings are hosted by group members or held in local restaurants and coffee shops. Topic books are recommended by group members. The focus has been on women mystery authors, but male authors are not excluded. Some of the livelier discussions were centered on local authors such as Donna Andrews and Marcia Talley. This year, we will discuss a mystery written by Alexandria AAUW Branch member, Linda Rainwater. Linda’s book is entitled The Second Milagro. During holidays, we look for mysteries that might have a holiday theme. We always welcome new members as well as suggestions for new mysteries. Please join us.

On The Go With AAUW cable TV show – Ruth Bennett
